I am currently working on a narrative fiction piece of fantasy video art. Throughout the piece there will be a voice over spoken in first person to represent the protagonist's words. Listening carefully to the track and observing the visuals, a story of myth and legend will unravel some dark secrets about the location, and the true existence and being that is, Mylo the last living Aufwader..

The magical character tells the story of their folk or race, and is inspired by the ‘Aufwader’ tribe, which are ‘fisher-folk’ creatures from the ‘Whitby Witches’ trilogy of books by Robin Jarvis. In the books the creatures live by the sea, and only special people with ‘the sight’ or sixth sense can see them. I like the mystery about the Aufwaders and that by building tension until the very end, suggests the audience could be one of the chosen who have the ‘sight’ when they see the creature’s figure in the final shot turn and look into the lens. I am considering either a mask to be worn, or the figure to be merely a silhouette against the landscape. I particularly like the idea of directing the protagonist to have it’s back to the camera before the last 24 frames (or less) when it looks over its shoulder straight towards us.

Intertwined with the various POV shots mentioned above there would also be scenic shots of the locations, establishing landscapes and key iconography such as boats and birds etc. There will be close ups and extreme close ups of textures like water, sand and shells; and the movement of the waves and clouds. With the magic of green screen, there will be voyeuristic shots of the Aufwader’s home, lair, or cave and all the objects it contains, which will excite and intrigue. They will be filmed in my attic where I have designed a set comprising of many potions and secrets.

To represent time passing, time-lapse sequences and stop motion animations will offer a visual change where the implications of time and space have been manipulated with an interesting contrast of textures and processes.  I am collaborating with my brother, Simon. I am the writer, director, editor, voice, sound and foley artist, and in charge of all time lapse and stop motion. I am also first camera which includes any shots which do not feature the protagonist whom I perform wearing a mask and costume. Simon is second camera and he is filming the shots containing Mylo, as well as being in charge of green screen, and special effects.

The sound will be composed of three tracks; the voice over narration, atmosphere recorded from Leigh-on-Sea beach, and an added score comprised of ambient sounds. The intention is that the script will have a poetic rhythm which can then mix into the other tracks for a full audio treat holding as much potency in story telling as the moving image.

I particularly enjoyed filming the wildlife on location at Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
